Vogue x Ebay charity Auction powered by responsible technology

Given the ever-growing popularity of second-hand fashion, British Vogue teamed up with eBay to hold a pre-loved auction last month, featuring luxury items worn by the likes of Chioma Nnadi, Munroe Bergdorf and Jourdan Dunn, as part of our Forces For Change initiative. Vogue’s partnership with eBay aims to highlight the need for a more sustainable fashion industry, and shine a spotlight on those who are pushing for change.

“Championing circular fashion is central to what we do here at eBay,” Jemma Tadd, head of fashion for eBay UK, explains. “That’s why our partnership with Vogue’s Forces for Change initiative, a flagbearer for driving progress in culture, fashion and sustainability, has been so important to us in our mission to make pre-loved fashion the first choice.”

In total, the auction has raised more than £17,000 – including a donation from the talent who waived their fees for taking part in a video promoting the auction – for Canopy Planet, a non-profit working to tackle the deforestation of ancient and endangered forests. “We are so grateful to Vogue, eBay and the celebrities involved. Creative initiatives like this capture our imaginations and will ultimately help us to be successful in conserving forests, stabilising our climate and building a low-impact fashion sector,” Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Canopy Planet, says.

The most coveted pieces included a vintage Tom Ford-era Gucci Horsebit 1955 clutch, which sold for £1,120, and a Prada Re-edition 2000 crystal bag, which sold for £1,140 – both were worn in a shoot by British Vogue commerce director Naomi Smart. Meanwhile, a Bottega Veneta blue Jodie mini bag worn by Chioma Nnadi was sold for £659, while a beaded Tom Ford for Gucci bag worn by Jourdan Dunn went for £580.

It’s perhaps no surprise that luxury bags were among the most popular items, given eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee, which means handbags and jewellery worth £500 or more are inspected and verified by a team of experts on purchase, allowing you to buy in complete confidence.

The success of the British Vogue X eBay auction proves that buying second-hand doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on style – indeed, there’s a vast array of incredible pieces out there. “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to partner with Vogue to spotlight pre-loved fashion and raise crucial funding, while boosting the circular economy,” Tadd concludes.
